A Growing Field

The article “Growing Fields” , a man by the name of John Christian, 33 who owns the Nature’s Edge Farm which covers four and a half hilly acres in Canterbury Connecticut. John bought the property three years earlier to raise chickens and goats. “Organic farmers don’t use synthetic fertilizers, so it takes time and effort to develop rich soil.” In Christian’s farm he grows mostly greens such as, lettuce, Kula, Aragua, Bok Choy and flowers.
Some facts:
-Farming has been a family business for generations.
-In 2006, there were just 1.3 million farmers.
-80% of those were self-employed ranchers.
-Acreage dedicated to organic farming grew from 170,071 acres in 2004 to 488,340 acres last year.
Organic farmers must meet a strict criterion to be certified. Certifying organization inspect farms to check if the are fallowing the rules. The best way to find out if a farming job is right for you is to try it for awhile.
